It's a really unfortunate sounding name in English. OTOH MediaTek's struggled to get its high end SoCs into products for the western market; perhaps they just don't care.
Haha this sort of somewhat tacky usage of something grand is common in HK, Macao and Taiwan. For example I know a guy from Macao named after some Roman emperor, just forgot which.
I actually like it. It has all the desirable characteristics - can be googled - sounds vaguely impressive and cool - can be amped up to 11 when a new product justifies it ("You've loved our Dimensity chips, but this new product is so impressive we needed to give it a new name. Meet the Trimensity 1, our new flagship SoC for desktops!")
Asking the community, what is the state of getting drivers for MediaTek hardware and running an AOSP or similar build of Android? Does it work, ***well?***
I ask for the hardware often looks like an awesome performance for the value, but I do not know if I trust the software the OEM puts on.
I never had concerns with MTK hardware. Owned a Redmi Note 4 back in the day, the Helio X20 was fast, ran games well, even if it wasn't the most efficient. But then again that was on like a 20nm process with an inefficient deca-core CPU, so things must have improved since then.
I happen to own a Sony Xperia E5, based on MT6735 SoC. It's stuck on Marshmallow it originally shipped with and since Mediatek's ecosystem is pretty much undocumented walled garden there is not a single community ROM for this device.
I've read similar stories about other MTK-based devices so I avoid them at all cost.
Works like a champ, the only thing I not like is having to time and time again force to higher volume level when it turns down to "prevent damage to hearing or speakers" warning
battery lasts many many many days between charges
I personally think these specs listed are awesome, how they are actually implemented is as per usual up to the OEM/AIB
however 4 cores running 600Mhz quicker than the 4 smaller ones, so much better than the normal ~300Mhz speed difference, says likely this will run very snappy overall, likely also not chew through battery reserves as bad as many of these so called "flagships" with much higher increased specs hampered by "few years back battery size limitations"
pretty sure ALL MAKERS can target a minimum of 4000 Mah with zero problems as well as include a 3.5mm jack AND wireless/bluetooth if they really wanted, you know so some folks who prefer not juicing their brains with EMF from BT/Wireless have the option (not to mention with a 3.5mm jack there is LOTS more you can do than BT/Wireless seems capable of..without costing 1/3 price of most phone to get the adapters (if you are lucky)
finally, while the name seems "odd"
I actually like it, odd but interesting, very unique as well ^.^
It isn't just the OEM that worries me. Google is also a problem just in general. Does AOSP do anything to keep Google from perving creeping all over your phone?
Driver support and working kernels for newer versions of Android has been an issue with MTK SoCs in the past.
In theory, with the release of Project Treble (and the other projects that improve on that, I forget their code names, though), this shouldn't be as much of an issue going forward.
Any MTK device that ships with Android 9+ must support Project Treble. Thus, it will be possible to run generic system images on top.
I believe he/she was referring to the lower quality of hardware encoders compared with software encoders. This does not apply to hardware decoders because they do not tamper with the quality of the material, they just reproduce it.
Scratch that, thought this was talking about the Snapdragon 865 (followed link from the 865 overview so obviously that's what this thread's about). (┛◉Д◉)┛彡┻━┻
Seems to mirror the Exynos990 in the CPU department, but as expected cuts corners in graphics including the ISP. Pretty decent overall as long as pricing is right.
Looking on these slides, we can some interesting details: https://www.notebookcheck.net/MediaTek-Dimensity-1... It supports LPDDR4X. It gets ~12k points in geekbench, 7% better than SD855! Sure, SD865 will bring a higher number even if based on the same A77. Then, the 9 core cluster GPU is 15% better than Adreno 640. It has wifi ax integrated. It has dual sim dual standby 5G. I really don't care and don't want mmWave, so sub 6Ghz is enough. This looks like an amazing chip, being over 10% better in perf compared to SD855. It all depends on efficiency and price, but I think it will be a very good chip so looking forward to see it on the market.
Wow, it really seems Mediatek is following AMD closely. I would love to see a global vendor like Moto, Samsung, or even HMD using this design with a good capacity battery (5k mah ?) and an AMOLED screen. And it would really be a flagship killer in 2020.
If only they opened their source too... I love my Mediatek G90T powered device (Redmi Note 8 Pro) it's perform just as good if not better than 730G with cheaper price. But the custom rom development have been scarce... If only Mediatek follows Qualcomm making something like Code Aurora Forum...
