In general yes. Their backup tool likely doesn't work on Vista/prior or *nix. Apple's backup tool only officially supports their own HFS+ file system. I suspect the question is if their backup tool for Macs is a standalone that writes to the default presumably NTFS file system on the drive working completely stand alone from Time Machine, creates an HFS+ virtual drive for Time Machine - allowing the rest of the drive space to remain usable for anything else, or reformats the drive to HFS+ making it only readily usable on a Mac.
